Cardisoma guanhumi

Bluish crab measuring about 10 cm is a traditional delicacy in states such as Alagoas, Bahia, Paraíba, Pernambuco, and Sergipe, where it is served with pirão (fish broth and manioc flour mush) or cooked in a coconut sauce. The consumption of this crab, however, is scheduled to end: a decree published by the Brazilian Ministry of Environment in June 2015 banned the catching and marketing of this crustacean starting December 2015, because the species is in serious danger of extinction. Restaurants, breeding sites and fish markets that still have blue land crabs in stock may sell them until the end of 2016.
