Averrhoa bilimbi

Also know by many other names in Portuguese and in English, such as cucumber tree and tree sorrel, which can be confusing. Names apart, the small greenish fruit is very pleasing to those who love acidic flavors. Related to the star fruit, it can be used to replace lime in salad dressings and salsas, and it renders good caipirinhas, and can be pickled with hot peppers. In Bahia, it is also used to complement moquecas (fish stews). In Amazonian folk medicine, bilimbi tea helps fight colds; in Atlantic rainforest regions, the juice is believed to treat fevers and diarrhea.
