Also known as chumbinho and berbigão, this bivalve mollusk is native to the mangrove swamps, and more popular in the states of the Northeast region, such as Bahia and Maranhão. A well- known dish is Moqueca de sarnambi, made with dende oil, but the small cockle can also be simply cooked in coconut milk and seasonings, or added to Frigideiras, that is, sautéed with tomato and bell peppers, among other vegetables, covered with beaten eggs and baked until golden brown.
