Strombus pugilis

Found in Todos os Santos Bay, in Bahia, this beautiful, orange shell hides a tasty mollusk that can be used to enhance salads, and fish and shellfish stews. Before cooking it, it is necessary to remove the intestine and the “nail” of the animal, which can be used to prepare a broth regarded as aphrodisiac. In Ilha de Maré, district of Salvador, an annual festival is dedicated to fighting conch, known locally as peguari.
